4 STEPS TO STOP DOG DIGGING

Digging is a normal behavior that many dogs absolutely love. Unfortunately, this behavior can be incredibly destructive to expensive landscaping.

Here are four steps to stop the destruction.

1. Increase daily physical and mental exercise.

A dog that is both physically and mentally tired is less likely to make up their own fun games like re-landscaping your yard.

2. Supervise yard time.

Dogs are opportunists. If you don’t supervise when your dog is in the yard, you will be unable interrupt them from digging.

3. Teach a solid “leave it” cue.

Interrupt with a “leave it” cue the moment digging starts. Do not allow the digging behavior to be practiced in an area you don’t want them to dig.

4. Provide a dig pit.

Build a designated dig pit and redirect your dog there any time they think about digging. This can be built directly into the ground with 2x4s for a clearly defined boundary, or by purchasing a pond liner and filling it with play sand.

Happy training!
